Youth & Community Work

June 2011 – December 2012: Kent County Council
F/T Youth Worker (and Centre Manager) at Faversham Youth Centre.
Managing a youth centre and continuing to develop a programme of activities that meets the needs of young people in the locality. Developing initiatives and partnerships that will enhance relations, encourage young people to participate in positive activities and to enable young people to build strong links with their local community. Also, recruiting, managing and supervising sessional youth workers, coaches and cleaners.

Dec 2003 – May 2011: Kent County Council (Kent Youth Service in partnership with The Sittingbourne Community College). Youth Arts Worker (also known as Community Youth Tutor).
Working at a secondary school with Specialist Status in the Creative and Performing Arts, with young people aged 11-19 yrs. Planning, delivering and evaluating a wide range of exciting and innovative Youth Arts activities, lessons, cross-curricular work and community projects, during the school day, extended day, holiday clubs and residentials in the U.K. and abroad (inc. circus, drama, mask work, mime, performance, stage combat and Theatre in Education). Establishing and managing SittCom Circus: an award-winning, non-profit, youth circus collective, facilitating peer-led circus workshops to young people throughout Kent at schools, youth centres, community and county events, holiday projects and festivals. Organising and leading an annual Youth Streetshow, performed at the International Street Theatre Festival in Ghent, Belgium (2006-10). All projects have been filmed and edited with free copies given to all participants (over 150 different DVDs created 2004-11) Also, holder of the 2007 Individual Gold Award at K.C.C.’s Quality Service Awards, within the Communities Directorate (the largest Directorate in K.C.C., with over 6000 employees).

Oct 2002 – Sept 2003: Travelling around Australia.
Facilitating workshops in circus skills, clowning, drama and slapstick with 5-18yr olds at community events, festivals, parks, play schemes and youth centres.

Mar 2002 – July 2002: Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Youth Activities Co-ordinator.
Working at a Youth Referral Unit with young people aged 11-16yrs with emotional and behavioural difficulties (E.B.D.). Creating, running and co-ordinating outdoor activity work and other projects.

Jan 2001 – Mar 2001: Lancashire County Council.
Advice & Information Worker.
Working at a seaside drop-in centre for young people aged 14-25yrs, offering advice, information and support, as well as practical skills in managing their own lives.

Jan 2000 – Dec 2000: Kingswood Bus Project.
Project Co-ordinator.
Co-ordinating, developing and administering a mobile youth project, responding to the needs of young people aged 11-25yrs in South Gloucestershire. Also recruiting, managing and training a staff team.

Aug 1997 – Dec 1999: Rhondda Cynon Taff Borough Council. Youth & Community Worker on Perthcelyn Community Development Regeneration Strategy.
Establishing, developing and supporting a range of youth provision for local young people aged 11-25yrs. Identifying and responding to need; establishing and managing a youth club, youth committee and youth resource base; providing and delivering off-estate activities. Also recruiting, managing and training a voluntary staff team of local adults.

Casual Residential Care Youth Worker.
Assisting, engaging, empowering, motivating and negotiating with young people aged 11-17 yrs. Also teaching circus skills and producing a short performance by young people. Employed on a 24yr shift basis.

Sept 2001 – July 2002: Sherman Youth Theatre (Cardiff).
Street Theatre Workshop Facilitator.
Facilitating and directing theatre projects with young people aged 11-18 yrs. Also exploring street theatre, clowning and slapstick.

Mar 2001 – Sept 2001: Arts Play Umbrella (nationwide).
Circus Performer & Workshop Facilitator.
Performing in a story-based family circus theatre show (non-animal) and delivering circus workshops to children, young people and adults.
