Who is Tom?

I've always had a passion for the Arts. From school drama, I went on to join and form youth theatre companies, specialising in Street Theatre, Forum Theatre and Theatre In Education. I have, too, juggled my way across Europe and Australia, and performed and taught on circus tours throughout the UK.

Since qualifying in Youth & Community Work in 1995, I've worked for a variety of statutory and voluntary organisations in England and Wales. From establishing, developing and managing youth centres, drop-in services, community cafes, street-based work and mobile youth projects to assisting, empowering, engaging, inspiring, instructing, motivating and supporting young people, I've always tried to stick to my strong, social education principles: helping people to gain for themselves, the necessary knowledge, feelings and skills, in order to meet their own developmental needs and those of others.

With a strong focus on the Arts, I have created, facilitated, managed and evaluated a wide range of projects with children and young people using circus, clowning, drama, Forum Theatre, improvisation, issue-based work, mask work, scrap materials, slapstick, stage combat, street theatre, T.I.E. (Theatre in Education) and video (filming & editing).

I have effected life-changing experiences in a significant number of young people, many of whom have gone on to become professional actors, circus performers, script writers and teachers. Although some may not perform well at more traditional subjects, many of them excel in Youth Arts. Instead of failing, they quickly discover that they're able to do it and become empowered by their own success. Not only do the young people work harder but they have a desire to work harder. Young people have 'found' themselves, identified how they can be successful and recognised for such, which has then had a positive impact on their attitude, behaviour and academic success. Helping young people to find that desire and to help further their creative potential, have always been paramount in my work.
